The first round of the Lloyds 2025 National MTB Cross Country Series took place at Cannock Chase, where three riders from the Guernsey Velo Club competed in this exciting event; Zach Smith, Charlie Tourtel, and Mark Le Page.
Cannock is a challenging venue known for its rugged terrain. The 4.9km course was a true test for riders, featuring an array of obstacles including ruts, roots, and a significant amount of single track. The course also included short sharp climbs, steep drop-offs, and the notoriously difficult rock garden, making it a demanding race for everyone.
Utmost Academy rider Zach Smith competed in the highly competitive Youth category. Gridded 28th out of 57 riders, Smith made an explosive start, showcasing his exceptional racing skills. Over the course of four laps, he expertly navigated the challenging terrain, steadily passing several competitors. His hard work and tenacity paid off as he crossed the finish line in an impressive 15th place. A great result in his debut in this category.
Fellow Utmost Academy rider Charlie Tourtel took to the start line in the Junior category, facing a challenging task as one of the younger competitors in the class. Gridded 28th out of 36 riders, Tourtel completed an impressive five laps, making a strong start and skilfully manoeuvring through the field. His efforts on the demanding track culminated in a commendable finish, securing 18th spot. Charlie said “I felt strong on a technical course and finished ahead of several riders I didn’t expect to beat, it was a really good race for me and I’m looking forward to Round 2”.
Mark Le Page competed in the converted Expert class, where he was gridded 18th among 37 top riders. After a slow start, getting hemmed in behind riders on the single track, Le Page managed to regroup and put together a series of consistent lap times over the eventual 6 lap race, finishing in a solid 25th position.
The first round of the British Cycling National XC series was another tough event that tested the limits of all the riders. All riders demonstrated their talent and resilience, representing the Guernsey Velo Club admirably.
Club representative Adrian Tourtel noted that it was a great event, and inspiring to see club riders competing alongside some of the best cyclists in the UK. The experience gained from this race will undoubtedly contribute to their future performances in the series and invaluable preparation for Le Page and Tourtel for the Island Games in Orkney.
I enjoyed the weekend and I am planning to race the next round as well as targeting some of the Southern XC races. The experience was better for having club mates racing here too - Mark Le Page.
